Custom Adsense Heatmaps
Google has released their own heatmap, which is fairly useful, but it doesn’t give specific ad placement examples, it just gives broad areas where you should place ads. I have created two heatmaps based on my most successful ad placements. Neither of the ad placement examples are too extreme but will still achieve 5% to 30% CTR depending on your traffic sources and ad relevance.
The ad unit displayed between the first and second paragraphs of content is unignorable, making this placement perfect for countering ad blindless. Along with relevant ads and good traffic sources this placement can easily reach 20% to 30% CTR. Following is a real world example of this placement.
With just one left-floated ad unit this placement won’t annoy your visitors but this placement will have a lower CTR because of this. This placement is more susceptible to ad blindness than the #1, but can still achieve 10% CTR with good traffic sources and ad relevance.
Ad Placement #1 (Heatmap)
The link unit at the top of the sidebar, when blended and with good traffic sources, gets 2% to 5% CTR. Many people don’t even try placing a link unit in their layout, but one link unit can increase a websites eCPM by a fair amount. The ad unit displayed between the first and second paragraphs of content is unignorable, making this placement perfect for countering ad blindless. Along with relevant ads and good traffic sources this placement can easily reach 20% to 30% CTR. Following is a real world example of this placement.
Ad Placement #2 (Heatmap)
In you are interested in a less intrusive ad placement for a site which relies on return visitors like a blog, this ad placement will suit you well. With just one left-floated ad unit this placement won’t annoy your visitors but this placement will have a lower CTR because of this. This placement is more susceptible to ad blindness than the #1, but can still achieve 10% CTR with good traffic sources and ad relevance.
